Maintenance Instructions
Clean the instrument between each measurement using a soft, damp cloth. Failure to clean the prism on a regular basis will lead to inaccurate results and damage to the prism's coating.
Accurate measurement depends on careful calibration with distilled water. The prism and sample must be at the same temperature for accurate results. Do not expose the instrument to damp working conditions, and do not immerse the instrument in water. If the instrument becomes foggy, water has entered the body, and the instrument should be replaced.

Purchased this exact one over a year ago and it has worked flawlessly. Definetly a great buy!
Great buy, don't pass it up. This is SOOOO much better than the cheap plastic swing arm hydrometer. Accurate and easy to use. You will not regret buying this item. It is a must for any reef keeper.
I purchased this refractometer from Drs. F&S. I couldn't live without it now. It's easy to use. I have found that the hydrometer can be off by as much as .004... a big difference if you are keeping some invertebrates. I highly recommend this to add to your reef equipment.
Amazing accuracy, easy to calibrate, and not affected by temperature swings. So quick and easy to use, I can check my water in less than a minute with no fear of inaccuracy. If you want to keep a saltwater tank of any kind, this is one of the best investments you could possibly make.
I was unsure about purchasing this item because of the cheap price. I was very surprised when it arrived. It is a very nice unit for the money; it even comes with a case, calibration screwdriver, and a sample dropper. Forget about float arm hydrometers and buy a refractometer instead.
Float arm hydrometers are calibrated at a very low temperature. Mine reads at 1.024. When I found out about this I bought this refractometer from Drs. Foster and Smith. The factory calibration was dead on, and stays dead on. When I tested my water with it, it was very high at 1.0275. It is very high quality. I don't know how I lived without it. Thanks Drs. Foster and Smith.
I lost my old refractometer and I was forced to use a brand new hydrometer. Knowing the difference, I was making my salinity @38ppt. Today I got my new refractometer test and my salinity reads 30ppt. That is a lot of difference. This is a must have and at this price with an automatic temperature correction is a deal.
Since refractometers use the refractive properties of light at different salinities, they are much more reliable and reproducible than the water density float hydrometers, which are prone to many kinds of error. Also, this affordable model is very easy to use, and will give you an accurate and precise reading much faster than the float hydrometers. This is one of the few "must-haves" in the hobby.
I decided to incorporate hyposalinity treatments into my livestock therapies, so I purchased this refractometer in hopes of achieving accuracy & control. Don't let the low cost scare you away, this is an exceptional piece of quality equipment. After seeing how inaccurate my old swing arm unit is, I wouldn't use anything but this refactometer for salinity measurements. It's easier to use than trying to shake the bubbles off a swing arm.
I was not sure on this one unitl it got home... wow! Quick and easy to use, I can check my water often simply because it is so easy to use. One of the best investments that I have made for my salt water aquarium.
Testing your water parameters is an important method of foreseeing problems in your aquatic ecosystem before they result in catastrophe. Luckily, tools that were once only accessible (and affordable) to advanced hobbyists have since become simpler.
Specific gravity measures the relative salinity (amount of dissolved salts) in your aquarium water in comparison to pure water. Measuring specific gravity on a regular basis is crucial to maintain the ideal environment for your marine inhabitants.
Create the perfect saltwater mixing container to have available for emergency water replacements as well as your regular water changes. We explain how.
Don't take the quality of your tap water for granted. If you draw your water from a well, nature may not be providing you the perfect balance. If you are using tap water from your municipal department, it likely includes minerals and additives.
